Patricia (Knell) Grant, 87, of Meriden, passed away on Thursday, September 3, 2015 surrounded by her loving family. Patricia (Pat) was the beloved wife of the late John William Grant. Born in Meriden, July 20, 1928, she was the daughter of the late Marion Lally and Edward G. Knell. In addition to being a homemaker of a very large family, she was very active in many organizations/businesses including the CT Jaycees, Easter Seals, Quarter Horse Association and The Grant Corporation. Patricia is survived by her seven children and their spouses: John and Debbie Grant, Jr.; Kevin and Kim Grant, Suellen and Richard Allen; Patricia and Robert Angiletta, Terrance and Robin Grant; Shannon and Christopher Coyne, Meggan and Joseph DaCunto, two special nephews and spouse: Marc and Deirdre Papandrea and Ned Papandrea and daughter in laws: Theresa Grant and Linda Grant. She was also the proud matriarch of 30 grandchildren; Molly and Stephen Moorer, Jacquelyn and Shane Phillips, Melissa Berger and Joshua Jaufmann, Jeffery Berger, Jessica and Jessie Showerda, Heidi and Matthew Holmes, Heather and Alex Sardinas, Zachary and Caitlin Grant, Casey and Shana Grant, Patsy Grant and Kirstyn Eighmy, Cody Grant, Katelyn and Mark Giusti, John and Katherine Allen, Maggie Allen and Ben Abela, Robert Angiletta Jr and Cathryn Haines, Todd Angiletta and Emily Dinunzio, Mari-Jo and David Waskowicz, Brooke and Tyler Baker, Tyler and Amy Grant, Trevor Grant and Sarah Sita, Lyng -Seay Coyne, Garrett DaCunto, Jake DaCunto, Jordan DaCunto, Drew Papandrea, Emma Papandrea, Jed Papandrea, Lea Papandrea, Devon Reilly Dominique and Paul Kirk and 25 great grandchildren; Hannah Showerda, Georgia Showerda, Eli Showerda, Brynn Grant, Sam Grant, Timothy Spikes, Lex Sardinas, Cruz Sardinas, Grant Holmes, Tessa Holmes, Josphine Holmes, Charles Phillips, Dillyn Moorer, Braylen Moorer, Mackenzie Baker, Callie Baker, Grayson Giusti, Madison Abela, Sophia Waskcowicz, Gracie Waskcowicz, Elena Grant, Jameson Kirk, Derrick Angiletta, Jordan Angiletta and Connor Angiletta. Patricia was predeceased by her son Matthew Grant and four siblings, Barbara Papandrea, Bill Knell, Bud Knell and Missy Warland. Patricia is survived by two brother-in-laws and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial to be held on Friday, September 11, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Joseph Church, 105 Goodwill Avenue, Meriden (Corner of West Main Street and Lewis Avenue). Andrew D. Erwin, 51, of Meriden, passed away on Tuesday, September 8, 2015 after a lengthy illness. Born in Tuxedo, NY on December 2, 1963, he was the son of Carol Erwin of Meriden and the late Clarence Erwin. In addition to his mother, he is survived by his son Thomas Maguire, his daughter Cassidy Maguire, his grandson Anthony Maguire, his brother Daniel Erwin, his sister Anna Erwin, his sister and brother in law, Janice and Thomas Ahearn, his maternal grandmother, and two nieces. Family and friends are invited to attend a memorial service to be held on Thursday, September 17, 2015 at 5:30 p.m. at the John J. Ferry & Sons Funeral Home, 88 East Main St., Meriden. Evelyn Giesbrandt

Evelyn M. Giesbrandt, 65, wife of Ed Giesbrandt, died on Monday, September 14, 2015 peacefully at her home surrounded by her family after a lengthy and courageous battle with stage IV cancer. Born in Germany on June 29, 1950, she was the daughter of the late Ulrich and Helene (Steigel) Pollak. Evelyn and her parents came to America in 1951 searching for a better life. She was a graduate of Platt H.S., Class of 1968. Evelyn was a receptionist for Carabetta Management of Meriden for many years and was very grateful for the kindness and compassion that they showed during her employment and illness. She was a parishioner of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church at St. Colman Church. Evelyn had a strong faith which helped keep her positive during difficult times. She loved spending time with her family and enjoyed cooking for her husband, family and friends. Besides her husband of forty years, she is survived by her two children, Ed Giesbrandt Jr and his wife Stacey of Berlin and Jennifer Pelletier and her husband Ron of Berlin; four grandchildren, Amber and Kailee Giesbrandt and Nolan and Darren Pelletier; sisters-in-law, Carol Piro of Middletown and Joan Bulley and her husband Jack of Rockfall; a very special friend Avis Flanagan of Wallingford who reunited Evelyn to her faith. She is also survived by several nieces, nephews and cousins. The family would like to acknowledge Dr. Sorcinelli and Nurse Pam and Staff for their great care and a special thanks to Dr. Thomas Helm and also to the Franciscan Life Center. The funeral will be held on Friday, September 18, 2015 at 10:30 am from the John J. Ferry & Sons Funeral Home, 88 East Main Street, Meriden, CT 06450 and at 11:00 am at Our Lady of Mt. Hoang Nhan, husband of Suu Nhan, passed away on Monday, September 14, 2015 at Hartford Hospital surrounded by his loving family. Born in Vietnam on September 10th, he was the son of Nguyen Thi Tam and the late Nhan The. He had resided in Meriden for the past twenty five years. Hoang was very proud to be a patient care employee of MidState Medical Center on Pavilion B for twenty four years, where his coworkers became like family. Hoang loved vacationing with and cooking for his family. Besides his wife Suu, he is survived by his children: Ngoc Malave, Dux and Veronica Nhan, Kathy and Matthew Fusaro, Trinh Nhan and Matthew Coty, and Linh Nhan, six grandchildren, a sister Tuyet Tran and several nieces and nephews. Paul Thomas Artkop, 74, passed away on September 16, 2015 at home surrounded by his loving family. Born in Meriden on August 26, 1941, he was the son of the late Roman and Mary Artkop. He was a parishioner of St. Stanislaus Church. Paul loved music and he especially loved spending time with his family. Paul’s family would like to thank his second family at Porter’s Pass for the sincere love and care they gave to Paul. He is survived by four sisters, Gloria Bubello and her husband Richard of Meriden, Diane Pasieka and her husband Walter of Ivoryton, Elizabeth Hadvab and her husband Walter of Orwell, VT and Karen Voytek of Middletown; two brothers, Richard Artkop and his wife Donna of Middletown and David Artkop of Rutland, VT, and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. He was predeceased by a brother, Ronald Artkop. Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial to be held on Monday, September 21, 2015 at 10 am at St. Stanislaus Church, 82 Akron Street, Meriden. Phyllis Pyskaty, 82, passed away on Saturday, September 19, 2015 at the Southington Care Center. Born on January 7, 1933, she was the daughter of the late Angela Babicz and Stanley Pyskaty of Meriden. Educated at St. Stanislaus School and Meriden High School, she worked as a librarian for the Curtis Memorial/Meriden Public Library for her entire professional life. She was a communicant of Saint Stanislaus Church. Phyllis was an intelligent and sensitive person who was devoted to her extended family and dedicated to her work. She was a selfless and loving caregiver to her father in his later years while working full time. She loved a stylish outfit and was able to enjoy some travel in her retirement. Phyllis is survived by several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her siblings, Rose Mesek, Stephanie Sobieski, Carolyn Wysocki, Andrew, Stanley and Peter Zapal. The funeral will be held on Wednesday, September 23rd at 9:15 a.m. from the John J. Ferry & Sons Funeral Home, 88 E. Main St., Meriden, CT 06450 and at 10 a.m. at St. Stanislaus Church, 82 Akron St., Meriden for a Mass of Christian burial. Burial will follow in St. Stanislaus Cemetery. Katherine V. Klatt, 91, wife of the late Harold Klatt died on Saturday September 26, 2015 at MidState Medical Center. Born in Meriden, she was the daughter of John and Katherine (Cerasale) Morley. Mrs. Klatt was a lifelong resident of Meriden and a Veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Army as a Surgical Technician. She is survived by three sons; Patrick H. Klatt of Meriden, Robin Terry Klatt and is wife Cathy of South Meriden and Kim Lee Klatt and his wife Denise, also of Meriden; five grandchildren; and her sister Phyllis Knoll and Husband Ted of Yalesville. She was predeceased by her son Harold John Klatt and her daughter Laurie Klatt. All services were private. Services were under the direction of the John J. Ferry & Sons Funeral Home.

Thomas Gawel

A well-respected baseball coach, Thomas H. Gawel, whose life was spent mentoring hundreds of young athletes, passed away suddenly on Tuesday, September 29, 2015 at the age of 61. He was an important man in the lives of his wife Jo-Anne (Bushey) Gawel, his son Matthew Gawel, his daughter-in-law Blair Gawel, and countless others. No one will ever be able to fill his shoes or coach third base like he did. Tom was born November 5, 1953 in Meriden, the son of the late Sally Gawel. He obtained a Bachelor’s of Science degree from Waterbury Technical College and was employed by GEMCO Manufacturing for over 30 years. Tom was a loyal parishioner of St. Aloysius Church in Plantsville. In addition to Jo-Anne, Matthew, and Blair, Tom is survived by numerous cousins. Though he grew up an only child, he became a beloved in-law to each member of Jo-Anne’s family. Thomas’ family invites you to a celebration of his life at John J. Ferry & Sons Funeral Home, 88 East Main Street, Meriden on Saturday, October 3, 2015 from 10:00am – 12:00pm. A memorial service will immediately follow from 12:00pm – 12:30pm. Burial will be at the convenience of the family. BERLIN LEONARD I. GONYEA Leonard I. Gonyea, 69, husband of Rose Marie (Ogin) Gonyea, died on Monday, October 12, 2015 at home after a brief illness. Born in Alburg, VT on June 16, 1946, he was the son of the late Raymond and Alice (Breault) Gonyea. He had resided in Berlin for the past eight and a half years and prior to that, lived in Meriden for most of his life. Mr. Gonyea was employed by Elmcap Industries and retired to enjoy the past few years with his loving wife. He was a parishioner of St. Laurent Church. Besides his wife, Rose Marie, he is survived by two daughters, Lori Keene and her husband Michael and Amy Gonyea; one son, Kevin Gonyea and his wife Beth; eight grandchildren, Michael Francoeur and his wife Jessica, Scott Passmore and Brandon Passmore, Melissa Gonyea, Jeffrey Gonyea, Kailee Gonyea and Jacob Gonyea, Xavier Heshmaty; one great-grandchild, Madison “Oscar” Shatkyvich; two sisters, Louise Fitzsimmons and her husband, James, Delia Singleton and her husband Jack; two brothers, Bernard Gonyea and his wife Marie and Richard Gonyea; his father-in-law, Ernest Ogin; three sisters-in-law, Sherry Gualano and her husband Richard, Betty Gonyea and Catherine Gonyea. June (Betta Biafore Hadley) Vandal, 74, passed peacefully at home on October 14, 2015 after a courageous three year battle with cancer. She was born in North Haven, the daughter of the late Elizabeth and Maurice Betta. June was a graduate of North Haven High School, class of 1958 and of Central Connecticut State University, class of 1962. She held various book keeping and Administrative Assistant positions throughout her career while living in Meriden, Virginia, California, and Vermont. She also served as a Town Clerk for Salisbury, Vermont. She was also very active in her community, holding several different board positions with the Meriden Kiwanis, serving as President of the Friends of the Library, and the B.A.B.E.S. She is survived by her loving husband of four years, Roger Vandal; her son, Frank Biafore III and his husband Tim, of El Cerrito, CA; her daughter, Beth Flanagan and her husband Glenn, of Meriden; her son, Robert Biafore and his wife Jenifer, of Cheshire; her grandchildren, Nicholas and Christine Flanagan, Jacob and Justin Biafore. She is predeceased by former husband, Alan Hadley; her sister, Alice Neleber; and grandson Matthew Flanagan. The funeral will be held on Saturday, October 17, 2015 at 11 a.m. at Our Lady of Mt. Maria A. (Liberatore) DiMattia, 90, wife of the late, Salvatore Vittorio DiMattia, died on Monday, October 12, 2015, surrounded by her loving family and friends. Born in Pratola Peligna, Italy on September 6, 1925, she was the daughter of the late Rocco and Anna (Puglielli) Liberatore. She had resided in Meriden since 1957 and was a parishioner of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church. She enjoyed having family and friends gather at her home for her homemade dinners using ingredients from her garden. She enjoyed attending local bingo with her daughter Anna. She is survived by her daughter, Anna DiMattia of Meriden; three sons, Aldo DiMattia and his wife Marilyn of Wallingford, Luciano (Lou) DiMattia and his wife Lisa of Wallingford, and Quintino (Quint) DiMattia and his wife Tammy of Meriden; six grandchildren, Jennifer, Erika, Carina, Joey, Michael and Jason; four great-grandchildren, Alyssa, Kirsten, Mikayla and Alex; a sister-in-law, Leonilda Lucente of Durham; a brother-in-law, Ulderico (Rico) DiMattia and his wife Ivana of Bristol and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by one sister and four brothers. The funeral will be held on Thursday, October 15, 2015 at 10:30 am from the John J. Catherine (Kabai) Taylor, 85, wife of the late William Taylor died on October 17th, 2015 peacefully at home, under the Franciscan Hospice Care, after a courageous battle with cancer and shingles for 3 years. Born in Meriden on April 15, 1930, the daughter of the late John and Katherine Kabai. She resided in Wallingford for the past 50 years and attended Meriden schools. Catherine was employed by Dorau-Calza Hairspring Company and Unimax Switch before retiring. She was a member of St. Stanislaus Church. Her favorite pastimes were reading and doing jigsaw puzzles. She is survived by her daughter, Janice Taylor of Wallingford; two sons, John Taylor of CA and Robert Taylor of Southington; two grandchildren, Robin Taylor of Southington and Steven Taylor of Meriden and her great-grandson, Hunter James Taylor of Southington. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews. Catherine was predeceased by Celia Taylor, John’s wife, two brothers, Walter and Joseph Kabai and two sisters, Anne Gariepy and Frances Weady. A special thank you to niece Jani Callan, neighbors Ken and Wilma Rowe, friends, Mary Jacob and Rita Kronenberger for their constant help and compassion over the years. Mary Urena Trepanier, 73, beloved wife of the late Henrie P. Trepanier, died on Thursday October 15, 2015 at Yale New Haven Hospital after a lengthy illness. Born in Ft. Kent, ME on July 20, 1942 she was the daughter of the late Docite and Marie Jandreau Caron. She was employed by AGC in South Meriden for 39 years before her retirement. Mary was a loving mother and devoted wife, her family was most important to her and always put their needs before her own. Mary was a kind and generous person and will be greatly missed. Mary is survived by her two sons, John S. Trepanier and his wife Bridget and Robert L. Trepanier and his wife Rosanne all of Meriden. Five grandchildren; Jonathan, Travis, Brittany and Amber Trepanier and Tyler Holcroft. One great grandson, Riley Holcroft. Three sisters; Norma Levesque, Iona (Darold) Long and Jean Boutot. Six Brothers; Richard (Lillian) Caron, Mel Caron, Harold (Leslie) Caron, Gil (Gloria) Caron, Norman (Rachelle) Caron and Danford Caron. A sister in law, Nicolina Jandreau. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews. Besides her husband Henrie, she was predeceased by a son James, four brothers, Val, Kit and Gaylon Caron and Arnie Jandreau, a sister Bernadette Jandreau and brother in law Danny Levesque. Donald Francis Embler, 60, husband of Deborah Downs Embler died unexpectedly on Saturday, October 17, 2015. Born in New Haven on July 16, 1955, son of the late Howard W. and Vera Cuny Embler. He was employed by Cunningham Supply in West Hartford for the past 18 years. Donald was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Meriden. Mr. Embler was an avid UConn Basketball and NY Yankees Fan. Donald loved to read. Besides his loving wife, he is survived by his daughter, Hannah Embler; two sons, Adam Embler and his wife Kristie and Andrew Embler; two grandchildren, Natalie Clinton and Ethan Embler; two sisters, Margaret Grot and Eleanor Embler; two brothers, Richard Embler and his wife Maureen and Thomas Embler and his wife Dorothy. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews and his beloved dog Lily. The funeral will be held on Thursday, October 22nd at 11 a.m. at the First Baptist Church of Meriden. James John LaRosa, 83 died Wednesday, October 14, 2015 after a long battle with Parkinson’s. James was born in Meriden on July 5, 1932. He lived at the Village of Kensington where he and his cat Rose were well taken care of. He was the son of the late Salvatore and Josephine (Nigro) LaRosa of Meriden. He graduated from Cheshire Academy. James owned and operated Meriden Construction Co., Inc. for many years. He learned his craft as a teenager working for other local contractors before starting his own business in 1953. He was also involved in agencies that governed the construction industry. In 1984, he was appointed to the Board of Directors of Call before You Dig, being the first contractor in the country to do so. In 1988 he served as President of UCAC. James LaRosa was an accomplished pilot and flight instructor operating his own plane for many years. He used to say this was the hardest accomplishment he ever made. James loved his music. He was also an accomplished Jazz musician, who played the trumpet, standup bass, and was the leader of The Jim LaRosa Band. He was a member of the Masons, the Elks and Knights of Columbus. For the last few years, Uncle Jimmy was able to open up his heart to his family. We are so grateful to have shared some of his life. He is survived by his niece, Jenine LaRosa-Monthei, two nephews John and Joseph LaRosa and several grand nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he is predeceased by his two brothers, John R. LaRosa and Joseph S. LaRosa, and his twin sister. Per James’ wishes, there will be no calling hours or funeral service. His family would like to give a special thank you to all of the Aides, Nurses and Staff at the Village of Kensington for all the care and friendship they gave him and Rosie. Stella Gratta, 97, beloved wife of the late Noah Chris” Gratta, died peacefully at home on Friday, October 23, 2015. Born in Meriden on June 2, 1918, she was the daughter of the late Stanley and Apollonia (Orzech) Gawel. Stella retired from Pratt & Whitney as an assembler in North Haven. She was an active member at St. Stanislaus Church and was a member of The Daughters of Isabella. Stella was a very hands on and doting grandmother and great grandmother. She loved collecting antique bottles and was an astute gardener. She is survived by a daughter, Margaret Cannatelli and a son Fran Gratta, both of Meriden. Nine grandchildren, Deanna Cannatelli; Allison Gratta; Stephen and Kenneth Gratta; Michael and David Gratta; Jennifer Cannata and April and Amber Gratta. Nine great grandchildren, Macario, Chris, Noah, Samantha, Brianna, Trevor, Nathan, Alexis and Hadley and many nieces and nephews. Stella was predeceased by two sons, Anthony and Stephen Gratta; two brothers Frank and Walter Gawel and a sister Julia Cwirka. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, October 27, 2015 at 10:00 a.m. in St Stanislaus Church, 82 Akron St. Meriden. Everyone is asked to meet directly at church. Burial in Sacred Heart Cemetery. Family and friend may call at the John J. Ferry & Sons Funeral Home 88 East Main St. Meriden on Monday, October 26, 2015 from 4 to 8p.m.

Helen (Beaudry) Bogdanski

Helen (Beaudry) Bogdanski, 93, wife of the late Albert Bogdanski passed away on Friday, October 30, 2015 at the Bradley Home. Born in Meriden on June 7, 1922, she was the daughter of the late Edmond and Mary Jane Daley Beaudry. Mrs. Bogdanski was a lifelong Meriden resident and graduated from Meriden High. Helen was employed by Revere Corp. of America of Wallingford where she was an inspector prior to her retirement in 1987. She was a parishioner of St. Joseph Church. Helen loved her family vacations at the beach. She is survived by two daughters, Judith Gumprecht and her husband Gerald and Joyce Wisniewski and her husband Richard, both of Meriden; five grandchildren, Jeffrey Gumprecht, Peter Gumprecht and his wife Tara, Rick Wisniewski and his wife Amy, Tim Wisniewski and his wife Amy and Jennifer Raymond and her husband Marc; five great-grandchildren, Alex and Calvin Gumprecht, Skyler and Hailey Wisniewski and Sidney Mae Raymond. Helen also leaves her extended family, a “sister” in-law and best friend, Teresa Beaudry. They shared a very special friendship and understanding of each other. They were “ 2 peas in a pod” A heartfelt thanks goes to her niece, Diana Kosienski and her nephew, Dr. Robert Beaudry for all their love and many adventures they shared with our Mom. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews. Helen was predeceased by three brothers, Robert Sr., Thomas and Edward Beaudry. The funeral will be held on Tuesday, November 3, 2015 at 10:30 a.m from the John J. Ferry & Sons Funeral Home, 88 E. Main St., Meriden and at 11 a.m. at St. Joseph Church for a Mass of Christian burial. Burial will follow in Sacred Heart Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home prior to the service from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory may be made to a charity of one’s choice. Her family would like to thank the Bradley Home Pavilion Staff for their outstanding care and concern and Dr. Audrey Lefkowitz for her loving care and friendship to our Mom.

Dylan Joseph Mishali, 22, died Tuesday, November 3, 2015 at Lawrence and Memorial Hospital in New London. He was the son of Haviv Mishali and Sharon McKeaveney. Dylan had resided in Meriden and New London and graduated from F.T. Maloney High School. He was a member of St. Andrews Episcopal Church. Since his early age, Dylan was always very loving unconditionally and won everyone’s heart with that great smile of his. With cerebral palsy he had many challenges and battles that he dealt with and always managed to stay positive and pretty much laughed even with the mishaps he would have. As he won each battle, he gave his love generously to all who were close to him. Dylan, you will always be in our hearts forever. God Bless. Besides his parents, he is survived by his twin brother, Alan Mishali and his step-mom, Nancy Jorge, both of Manchester, CT. Family and friends are invited to attend a funeral service to be held on Friday, November 6, 2015 at 10:00 am at St. Andrews Episcopal Church, 20 Catlin St., Meriden.
