Charles Joseph Gaj, 90, husband of 51 years to the late Helen (Zajac) Gaj, passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, August 21, 2014. Charlie was born February 3, 1924 in Meriden, a son of the late Joseph A. Gaj and Agnes (Brutz) Gaj. Charlie attended Wilcox Technical School. He had his own business as a carpenter builder with his brother Joseph for 13 years, building many homes in Meriden. He retired in 1986 from Pratt & Whitney Aircraft after 25 years. He enjoyed being in his workshop and was a generous father, grandfather, great grandfather, and friend, who was always willing to help anyone. Charlie is survived by two sons, Thomas Gaj and his wife Doris (Dot), and Richard Gaj and his wife Luanne, all of Meriden. His grandchildren, Julie Gonzalez and Luis, Michael Gaj and Sarah, Jeremy Gaj and Marie, Erica Wolf and Joshua, and Jessica Gaj. His great grandchildren, Marissa, Alexandra, Mackenzie, Jillian, Evan, and Lukas; and his very special best friend, Dougie DeCosta. Charlie was predeceased by a sister Stacia (Sally) Muzycka, a brother Joseph A. Gaj, and a grandson, Jonathan Gaj. Friends and relatives are invited to attend a funeral service to be held on Monday, August 25, 2014 at 11:00 am, at the John J. Ferry and Sons Funeral Home, 88 East Main St. Meriden. Burial will be in Saint Stanislaus Cemetery. Calling hours will be at the funeral home prior to the service on Monday morning from 9:30 to 11:00 am. His family is grateful to the wonderful care by Hospice, Guardian Angels, and especially caregiver William.

Marcellino Sabino

Marcellino Sabino, 82, of Cheshire, CT passed away peacefully in the arms of his loving wife and daughter in Meriden at the home of his daughter and son-in law after a brave battle with lung cancer on Wednesday, August 20th, 2014. He was the son of the late Giovanni and Giovannina Marra Sabino. He was born on August 12, 1932 in Treglia, Comune di Pontelatone, P. Caserta, Italy. He resided in Cheshire and prior to that in Meriden since coming to the United States in 1961. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Concetta (Izzo) Sabino, three children, John Sabino and his wife Mary (Weathers), Lina Zajac and her husband Stanley, and Anthony Sabino , twelve grandchildren: Neda , Gianna , Angela, Marcello, and Isabella Sabino; Tyler, Andrew, Marcel, and Christopher Zajac; and Giovanni, Marcellino, and Giuseppe Sabino. He was the brother of Vincenza (Emanuelle) Izzo, Angelina Del Nero, Agnese (Michele) Izzo, and Antonio (Lidia) Sabino. He also leaves sisters-in-law Antonia Palmieri and Antonietta Izzo and brothers-in-law Giovanni (Domenica) Izzo and Antonio (Carmela) Izzo. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was predeceased by two brothers who died in infancy, sisters-in-law Teresa Izzo, Ersilia Palmieri, and brothers-in-law Luigi Del Nero, Rinaldo Izzo, Giacomo Izzo, Tomasso and Gennaro Palmieri. Prior to his retirement Mr. Sabino was employed by the International Silver Company of Meriden, owned and operated Tony’s Deli in Meriden, and later worked for the Cheshire Board of Education. Mr. Sabino enjoyed gardening, his weekly poker games, Red Sox baseball, and trips to the casinos with his wife. For the last 15 years, he and his wife Concetta have enjoyed spending winters in Orlando, Florida. His funeral will be held on Saturday, August 23, 2014 at 9:15 a.m. from the John J. Ferry and Sons Funeral Home, 88 East Main Street, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church. Entombment will be in the Sacred Heart Cemetery Mausoleum. Family and friends may call at the funeral home Friday (TODAY) from 4 to 8 p.m. The Sabino family would like to thank all the staff at the Smilow Cancer Hospital at Yale, and to his aid from CT Hospice, Jessica for the excellent care given to Mr. Sabino.

Margaret A. Luby, 74, wife of the late Joseph A. Luby Jr., died on Friday, August 22, 2014 at Meriden Center. Born in Meriden on June 13, 1940, the daughter of the late Virgilio and Bertha (Bianchi) Pereyo, she had attended local schools. Mrs. Luby was employed by Meriden/Wallingford Hospital and Midstate Medical Center. She was a parishioner of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church and St. Joseph Church. She was a Brownie Leader for Troop # 252, Arts and Crafts Director for the Girl Scouts and was the past President of the Silver City Flower and Craft Gild. Mrs. Luby is survived by two daughters, Sue Jones and her husband Christopher of Meriden and Ann Lethbridge and her husband James of South Meriden; three grandchildren, Kristina (Tina) Jones, Amanda Silberman and Adam (AJ) Silberman and one great-grandson, Camryn Ronald Jablonski. She was predeceased by one sister, Ann Fable of Spain. The funeral will be held on Tuesday, August 26, 2014 at 10:30 am from the John J. Ferry & Sons Funeral Home, 88 East Main Street, Meriden and at 11 am at St. Joseph Church for a Mass of Christian Burial. Burial will be in Walnut Grove Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Tuesday morning from 9 to 10:30 am prior to the Mass. Cynthia Dutil French, 73, died suddenly Friday, August 22, 2014 at Hartford Hospital. She was the daughter of the late Leon and Caroline Hull Dutil. She was born in 1941 in Meriden and graduated from Maloney High School. She was a lifelong Meriden resident and was a member of St. Laurent Parish. Mrs. French retired from the State of Connecticut Office of the Comptroller, was a volunteer at Midstate Medical Center, the number one fan of the Platt High School Girls’ Basketball & Volleyball Teams and the Southington High School Boys Volleyball Team, she enjoyed going to the casinos and she was a diehard Yankees fan. There was nothing she loved more than spending time with her family. Cynthia was predeceased by her husband, Robert T. French. She is survived by her daughter, Christine Flynn and her husband, Daniel; two sons, Russell French and his wife, Barbara and Stuart French, all of Meriden; six grandchildren, Jessica, Cayla and Abigail French, Abigail Murphy, and Emily and Kiera Flynn; two nieces, Gina Dutil Layman of Middlefield and Tara-Lynn Dutil Tunison from Florida, and several great nephews. She was predeceased by her brother, Donald “Bugsy” Dutil. The funeral will be held on Thursday, August 28 at 10:15 a.m. from the John J. Ferry & Sons, Funeral Home, 88 East Main St., Meriden, and at 11:00 a.m. at St. Laurent Church for a Mass of Christian burial. Burial will be at the convenience of the family. Fred Richardson, 71, of Meriden, husband of the late Elizabeth (Aguair) Richardson, died on Monday, August 25, 2014 after a brief illness. Born in Newport, NH on August 15, 1943, the son of the late Carol and Virginia (Campbell) Richardson, he had resided in Meriden most of his life. He attended local schools and was a graduate of Meriden High School. Mr. Richardson was employed by Cuno Filtration Systems for over forty years prior to his retirement. He was a parishioner of St. Mary Church. He is survived by three sons, Fred Richardson of Waterbury, Mark Richardson of Columbus, NE., and David J. Richardson and his wife Denise of Meriden; three grandchildren, Ashley, Kailey and Joshua; three sisters, Norma Barillaro of South Meriden, Carol Bower and her husband Howard of Wallingford and Anita Cioffi of Meriden and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a son, Matthew Richardson of Southington; two sisters, Lee Catrona of Meriden and Betty White of Forestville, CT. The funeral will be held on Thursday, August 28, 2014 at 9:15 am from the John J. Albert Bordonaro, 87, of Meriden, husband of Lucy Spinelli Bordonaro, died Sunday, August 24, 2014. Born in Meriden on April 12, 1927, he was the son of the late Sebastian and Antoinette (Pistritto) Bordonaro. He was a lifelong resident of Meriden, except for his time in the U.S. Navy and a short time in California. He was a Navy Veteran having served during WWII. Mr. Bordonaro graduated from New England Technical Institute as an Electronic Technician. He received a Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Hartford and a Master’s Degree from Wesleyan University. He was employed by Yale TV as a television and radio technician during the 1950”s. He was also a Mathematics Teacher at Maloney High School from 1960 – 1969 and retired from Waterbury State Tech., in 1992, where he was a Mathematics Professor for 24 years. Besides his wife Lucy, he is survived by two step-sons; Dean Spinelli and Gary Spinelli and his wife Debbie, four step-grandchildren; Vanessa Wrobel, Brett Spinelli, Marie Taddeo and Candace Gebbia and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his first wife of 42 years, Enis Monteleone Bordonaro, three brothers, Salvatore, Angelo and Frank Bordonaro and four sisters, Santina Bordonaro, Carmelina Corsino, Helen Wirth and Josephine Malavenda. Family and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial to be held on Friday, August 29, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church, 109 Goodwill Avenue in Meriden. Elmer Frank Dallesander, 88, died peacefully at his home in Meriden on Thursday, August 28, 2014. He was the loving husband of Gloria Montefiore Dallesander for over 48 years. Born in Hartford on August 14, 1926, he was the son of the late Thomas and Kathleen (O’Rouke) Dallesander. He had resided in Meriden for the past 25 years and most recently in Southington for 15 years. He graduated from Buckley High School and the University of Hartford with a Master’s degree. Mr. Dallesander was employed by the State of CT., as the Chief Budget Analyst for 30 years. He was a veteran of WWII, having served with the U.S. Navy. He was a Board member at the WWII Veteran’s Memorial Hospital and a member of the Wiseman. He was an animal lover and donated time to the Meriden Humane Society. He enjoyed gardening and family gatherings. Besides his loving wife Gloria, he is survived by brother and sister-in-law, William and Florence Montefiore, sister-in-law, Joann Costello and three nieces, Denise Kupstis, Jodi Dufresne and Dana Knickerbocker and a nephew, David Montefiore and several great nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother Thomas Dallesander. A private service will be held with burial in Sacred Heart Cemetery. There are no calling hours. The John J. Ferry & Sons funeral Home, 88 E. Kevin R. Maslar, 26, beloved son of Bruce and Janice (McLaughlin) Maslar, died Wednesday, August 27, 2014. He was born in Meriden on June 15, 1988. He had resided in Durham, CT for the past 14 years and graduated from Coginchaug Regional High School. Kevin was employed by United Fuel Oil and United Fence Co. He had interests in the Holy Bible, football, weight lifting, golf, poetry, crossword puzzles and the daily jumble. Besides his loving parents, he is survived by three brothers; Matthew Maslar of East Haven, Christopher Maslar of Meriden and Joshua Maslar of Durham. He is also survived by his paternal grandmother, Jane Maslar of So. Meriden, his maternal grandmother, Alice McLaughlin of So. Meriden and many aunts, uncles and cousins. He was predeceased by his grandfathers Edward (Ted) McLaughlin and Richard (Muzzy) Maslar. The funeral service will be held Tuesday, September 2, 2014 at 11:30 a.m. from the John J. Ferry & Sons Funeral Home, 88 East Main St., Meriden and at 12:00 noon. at St. Joseph Church for a Mass of Christian Burial. Burial will be private. Rosemary (Walsh) Golden, 90, of Newington formerly of Meriden, died Monday, September 1, 2014 at Jefferson House in Newington after a lengthy illness. Born in New York, New York on November 27, 1923, she was the daughter of the late Thomas and Helen (Harrison) Walsh. She resided in Meriden for over 60 years. She graduated from St. Rose of Lima School, Meriden High School and St. John’s University School of Nursing. Ms. Golden was employed by Newington VA Hospital as a registered nurse over 35 years and more recently was assistant Director of Nursing until her retirement in 1985. She was a lifelong parishioner of St. Rose of Lima Church. She is survived by two nieces Lynn A. Barnes of Newington and Deborah J. Carpenter, her husband David and their daughter Kaitlin Carpenter, all of Burlington; two nephews James G. Barnes and his wife Patricia of Meriden and Michael R. Barnes of New York City. She was predeceased by a sister Evelyn Wilkom of Meriden Family and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial to be held Saturday, September 6, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Rose of Lima Church, 35 Center St., in Meriden. Ann Pellegrino, 101, of Vero Beach, Fl, passed away peacefully on 8/30/14 at 400A East Waverly Place in Vero Beach, with family and caregivers by her side. She was born on October 23, 1912 in New Haven, Ct and lived in Vero Beach for 31 years after coming from Meriden, Ct in 1984. Ann was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt and godmother. Ann lived her life caring for, loving, spending time and helping her family and friends. Her beautiful smile, gentle personality, generous and kind heart were an inspiration to everyone. Ann loved and was so proud of her grandchildren’s and great-grandchildren’s sports, academic and extracurricular activities. She was also a bigtime Boston Red Sox, UCONN Husky Men’s and UCONN Husky Women’s Basketball fan. And, to say Ann tremendously enjoyed reading, cooking Italian meals for others, gardening in her yard, holiday decorating and playing cards with her friends, would be an understatement. She volunteered in several civic activities: the Kiwanis Club in Meriden and The Riverside Theatre and Waverly Place Homeowners Association of Vero Beach; and, was a parish member of Holy Cross Church of Vero Beach and Our Lady of Mt. Carmel in Meriden. Survivors include her son James Pellegrino and daughter-in-law Veronica both of Meriden, Ct; three grandchildren Jeff and Jim Pellegrino both of Meriden, Ct and Lindda Barmore of Southington, Ct; eight great-grandchildren: Stephen, Alexandra and Samantha Barmore; Jeffrey, James, Juliann, Eric and Ryan Pellegrino; sisters Dorothy Sebastian of Meriden and Rose Kerr of Wethersfield, Ct, and many nieces and nephews. Ann was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years Albert Pellegrino, her sister Teresa and nine brothers. Friends and relatives are invited to attend a funeral service to be held on Friday, September 5, 2014, at 12:30pm at the John J. Ferry and Sons Funeral Home, 88 East Main St, Meriden, CT. Joseph Jukonski, passed away on September 2, 2014 in his hundredth year on this earth. Born in Middletown on October 23, 1914, he was the son of the late Pauline & Bronislaus Jukonski. He owned and operated the Modern Barber Shop on Pratt Street for over 50 years, and had many friends and regulars. An avid salt water fisherman, he shared his lobster, clams and fish with friends and family. Joseph a self-taught accordion player was with Vic Meyers and Walt Solek Polish bands and played many venues in CT and MA. He also entertained at family gatherings. He and his wife Adeline owned a cottage at Lake Beseck for many years and later camped at Hammonasett for many summers for his love of the water. He is survived by three grandchildren; Michael, Christine and Kathleen and three great grandchildren. He is also survived by his two loving nieces Gloria Giacco and Rosalie Mesite and many nephews. He was predeceased by loving wife Adeline Bovino Jukonski, his beloved son Michael and his only brother Walter of Middletown. He was also predeceased by his grandson James Jukonski. The funeral will be held on Friday, September 5, 2014 at 10:30 a.m. from the John J. Ferry & Sons Funeral Home, 88 East Main St., Meriden and at 11:00 a.m. at Sacred Heart Cemetery, Section 12 for a gravesite service. Eugene L. (Gene) Gorlewski, 71, husband of Marie A. Gorlewski, died on Friday, August 29, 2014. Born on November 7, 1942 in New Britain, CT, he was the son of the late Vincent and Josephine (Braczyk) Gorlewski. Gene resided in New Britain most of his life, attending local schools and graduating from New Britain Senior High School in 1960. Gene went on to earn a Bachelor of Liberal Arts in June 1964 from Middlebury College where he studied Russian language. After a brief career teaching German to high school students in Vermont, Gene returned to New Britain and settled into his career at the New Britain Herald, retiring in 2009 after over 30 years with the company, wearing many hats including that of City Editor. Gene was predeceased by his “best friend” and companion, Lady Anne, who gave both Gene and his wife great joy. At the request of the family there will be no calling hours.
