Dolores M. Berger, 71, wife of fifty–one years to Daniel J. Berger Sr. died on Wednesday, February 19, 2014 at MidState Medical Center. Born in New Haven on November 11, 1942, she was the daughter of the late Anthony and Anna Furino. She worked at International Silver Company for fifteen years and retired from Ekris Cable Company in New Britain. Dolores was an avid New York Yankee fan. She loved to watch her sons and grandsons play baseball and football. She was an avid bingo player with her sister-in-law Mary Freeman and her husband Al. She enjoyed spoiling her three great-grandchildren and taking care of her two grand-pups, Cody and Cooper. She is survived by one daughter Denise Berger-Catrone and Mark Trecina, (who can always make her laugh); two sons Dan J. Berger Jr. and his wife Mary and Douglas Berger; four grandchildren, Amberly and Jordan Catrone, Danny Berger III and Vincent Muli-Berger; three great-grandchildren, Christian, Eli and Gia Catrone-Olmeda; one sister and best friend Anna Fucci; close friends and sister-in-law Terry Furino and Eleanor Lane and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by three sisters, Tillie, Louise and Angelina and two brothers, Frank and Anthony “Chic”. Funeral services will be private. Friends may call at the John J. Ferry & Sons Funeral Home, 88 East Main Street, Meriden on Friday, February 21, 2014 (TODAY) from 5 to 7 pm.

Andrew Schipke

Andrew V. Schipke, 93, died on Friday, February 21, 2014 at Apple Rehab-Cocommo. Born in Meriden on April 5, 1920, he was a son of the late Andrew M. and Martha (Schilke) Schipke. Mr. Schipke graduated from St. Mary School and Horace C. Wilcox Technical School. He joined the United States Marine Corps in 1939. He was at Pearl Harbor during the attack and then fought in the Pacific area during World War II. He then went on to Korea and Vietnam. He retired as a Sergeant Major in 1966 after twenty-six years of active service. Mr. Schipke leaves behind his sister Miss Rose E. Schipke of Meriden. He was predeceased by his brothers, Bernard Schipke and Robert Schipke; his sister, Marguerite (Schipke) Hummer and several nieces, nephews and cousins. The funeral will be held on Tuesday, February 25, 2014 at 10:30 am from the from the John J. Ferry & Sons Funeral Home, 88 East Main St., Meriden and at 11:00 a.m. at St. Mary Church, 5 Sherman Place, Meriden for a Mass of Christian Burial. Burial will be in St. Boniface Cemetery in the Spring. Friends may call prior to the service from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.

Robert Joseph Buttner, 92, husband of the late Elna Falk Buttner of 68 years, died on February 21, 2014 at Midstate Medical Center after a brief illness. He was born in Meriden on July 17th, 1921, the son of the late Katherine and Max G. Buttner. Robert lived in Meriden for his entire life and attended Meriden schools. Mr. Buttner was employed by the International Silver Company as a tool and die maker, Elim Park Baptist Home as a maintenance supervisor, and retired from Bradley Home as a maintenance supervisor in 1986. He was a veteran of WWII, having served with the U.S. Army 28th Infantry Division in the European theater. Robert was awarded the Purple Heart; combat infantry badge; WWII victory medal; E-A-ME Theater Campaign medal, and the Good Conduct Medal and a Bronze Star. He was a member of Olivet Baptist Church, Hamden, CT, American Federation of Musicians Union; and he played the trumpet in the Meriden City Band; Lifetime member of the Disabled American Veterans; Member of the Military Order of the Purple Heart. Volunteer Firefighter for the City of Meriden. Robert was actively involved in the construction of the former Calvary Baptist Church at 262 Bee St. and served faithfully as choir director, Deacon and Boy’s Brigade leader. He volunteered with the BGC Gold in the upkeep of Lakeside Christian Camp. Mr. Buttner was an avid reader, enjoyed golfing and bowling. He and his wife attended all academic, music, and sporting events as proud Grandparents and the biggest fans of their beloved Granddaughters. He is survived by four daughters, Judith B. Lucia and husband Stephen of Meriden, Phyllis J. Gura and husband Clement of Plantsville, Ann L. Buttner and Beverly J. Buttner, both of Meriden; four granddaughters, Megan L. Beda and husband Bradley of Colchester, Karen E. Sima of Southington, Christine G. Niedbala and husband Gregory of Wethersfield, and Caitlin E. Gura (currently residing in Vienna, Austria); one sister-in-law Allene Falk of Williamsville, N.Y.; He is also survived by two nieces, Carolyn Falk-Weiner and husband, Michael of Pittsburg, PA and Nancy Falk of Bloomington, IL; one nephew, David A. Falk and wife Cheryl of Decatur, IL, three grandnieces and one grandnephew. He was predeceased by a daughter, Linda Ruth Buttner in January of 1951 and a brother-in-law, Theodore J. Falk The funeral will be held on Friday, Feb. 28th at 10 a.m. at the John J. Ferry & Sons Funeral Home, 88 E. Main St., Meriden, CT 06450 with Reverend William Arruda officiating. Burial with Military Honors will be in Walnut Grove Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Thursday, Feb. 27th from 4 to 7 p.m. Should friends desire, contributions in his memory may be made to the D.A.V. Diane M. Zyrkowski, 60, wife of Ronald E. Zyrkowski died on Saturday, February 22nd, 2014 at home surrounded by her family. Born in Meriden on Feb. 15th, 1954, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Jenevieve Dickinson Garofalo. Diane was a lifelong Meriden resident and graduated from Platt High School. She was previously employed by United Industrial Services for 15 years. Diane was a parishioner of St. Stanislaus Church, loved being a homemaker, and being with her dog Pokey. Besides her husband Ronald, she is survived by a daughter, Christina Zyrkowski of Meriden; a son, Michael Bergeron and wife Wendy of Colchester; three grandchildren, Ariana, Gabriella, and Brandon; a brother, Robert Garofalo of Meriden and an extended family in Vermont. The funeral will be held Thursday, Feb. 27th at 9:15 a.m. from the John J. Ferry & Sons Funeral Home, 88 E. Main Street, Meriden, CT 06450 and at 10 a.m. at St. Stanislaus Church for a Mass of Christian burial. Burial will be in Walnut Grove Cemetery. James W. Vosgien, Sr., 82, husband of Barbarann “Bobbie” Kronenberger Grimes Vosgien for 57 years, died Thursday, February 20, 2014 at MidState Medical Center in Meriden after a brief illness. Born in Meriden on June 29, 1931, he was the son of the late Lucien and Florence (Miramant) Vosgien. Mr. Vosgien had resided in Meriden and graduated from the Meriden High School, Class of 1949. Jimmy was employed by Acme Fast Freight and Bailey’s Express as dock hand and foreman until his retirement in 1993. He was a veteran of the Korean War, having served with the U.S. Marines Corp., with the rank of Staff Sargent. He was a parishioner of St. Laurent Church and a member of the North Italian Club. Jimmy loved to veggie garden and fish. He did great at both. Also was an avid New York Yankee, Giants and Boston Celtic fan. The UCONN Women Basketball team were top notch with us and we always watched them together. Besides his wife, whom he call Bob, he is survived by his children; Jaime Landry Sr., of Derry, New Hampshire, Jodie Schmidt and her husband John of Meriden and Keith Vosgien of Paris, France, his grandchildren; Kevin Landry, Jr., and sweetheart Stephanie of Hampstead, New Hampshire and Emily, Max and Isabella Schmidt of Meriden and his great grandchildren; Mikayla and Kenzie of New Hampshire. He is also survived by his sisters; Jean Burdette and dear friend Vincent Conte of Moodus and Carole and Hank Stevens of Nashua, New Hampshire, his brothers; Donald and Evelyn Vosgien of Middlefield and David and Marcia Vosgien of Southington, a brother- in- law Larry Cirillo of Meriden and many nieces and nephews. Jimmy is sadly missed by his beloved long haired dachshund “LitlBit”. He was pre deceased by his infant son, James W. Vosgien, Jr., infant twin sister Lois Joan Vosgien and his sister Kathleen Vosgien Cirillo. Family and friends are invited to attend a Funeral service to be held on Saturday, March 1, 2014 at 12:00 noon at the John J. Ferry & Sons Funeral Home, 88 East Main St., Meriden. Burial will be private. Calling hours will be prior to the service from 10:30 a.m. to 12:00 noon. Hector R. (Victor) Gonzalez, 79, husband of Isolina Gonzalez, died on February 26, 2014 at Midstate Medical Center. Born in Aguada, Puerto Rico on January 17, 1935, he was the son of the late Ramon J. and Mercedes (Morales) Gonzalez. Mr. Gonzalez had resided in Meriden for fifty-six years. He attended the University of Mayaquez and was employed by Prudential. He was a peacetime veteran having served with the U.S. Army. He was a parishioner of St. Rose of Lima Church and a member of Catholic Family Services, Maloney Scholarship Committee, Democratic Town Committee, and was the Chairman of the Meriden Housing Authority. He also served as past President of the Latin American Society. While serving as an active member on the Meriden Democratic Town Committee, Hector worked on local, state and federal campaigns serving as treasurer, district leader and delegate to state and congressional conventions. He was a leader in the Latino community and was most proud of his work in helping to get Latinos elected into office and appointed to local boards. He worked hard to create a strong voice for Meriden’s Hispanic population through his political activism, knocking on doors and making calls to encourage others to make their voices heard. Known for his kind demeanor and strong principles, he was well respected by town committee members and elected officials, who often sought his advice and counsel. Hector was instrumental in organizing the Latino Bi-Centennial Celebration which served to recognize Latino influence and contributions to the City of Meriden, the community he loved so much. On August 25, 2003 The Meriden Housing Authority first swore in Commissioner Hector Gonzalez. From that date onward the lives of the Meriden community were blessed with his knowledge, kindness and generosity. He has helped so many people and families throughout the entire Meriden Community. His kind deeds go far beyond words and the “recorded Board of Directors minutes”…his accomplishments and vision were far reaching and will affect the lives of the Meriden community for generations. The Meriden Housing Authority is proud to have had Hector as a devoted, Chairman of the Board, Acting Commissioner and Director! Hector served the MHA for over 10 years. He volunteered his time selflessly and without hesitation. His service to our organization is forever memorialized. Hectors commitment to the MHA Board of Directors was evident even in the preceding few days. On Monday February 24th, Hector came to the meeting, sat in his chair and shared laughter with all who were lucky enough to see him that evening. The Meriden Housing Authority is forever changed for the better because of Hector and he will be greatly missed by our entire MHA family. Besides his wife, Isolina, of fifty-seven years, he is survived by his son Victor and his wife Mary and his sister Miriam. He was predeceased by his daughter Yvette, his brother Isreal and his sister Grace. Friends and relatives are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial to be held on Monday, March 3, 2014 at 10 a.m. at St. Rose of Lima Church, 35 Center Street, Meriden. Everyone is asked to meet directly at church. Burial with Military Honors will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery. Relatives and friends may call at the John J. Ferry & Sons Funeral Home, 88 East Main Street, Meriden on Sunday March 2 from 2:00 to 6:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be made to the Hector R. Bertha E. Marcantonio, 93, wife of the late Michael V. Marcantonio passed away on Saturday, March 8th, 2014 at Midstate Medical Center after a brief illness. Born in Meriden on January 9th, 1921, she was the daughter of the late Martin and Agnes McMahon. Bertha was a lifelong Meriden resident and graduated from Meriden High School. She retired from Canberra Industries in 1988. Bertha was a parishioner of St. Joseph Church. Bertha loved 10 pin bowling, the Uconn Women’s Huskies and especially her grandchildren. Bertha is survived by two daughters, Patricia Marcantonio of Wakefield, RI and Michele and her husband Larry Bell of Meriden; a son, John Marcantonio of San Diego, CA; two grandchildren, Melissa Cooper and her husband Adam and Anthony Bell; three great-grandchildren, Brianna Cooper, Adam Cooper Jr. and Calob Cooper. She is also survived by several nieces, nephews and her loving pet Wally. Bertha was predeceased by a son, Michael W. Marcantonio. The funeral will be held on Saturday, March 15th at 10:30 a.m. from the John J. Ferry & Sons Funeral Home, 88 East Main St., Meriden and at 11 a.m. in St. Joseph Church for a Mass of Christian burial. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery. Nathaniel L. Simms, 79, of Cheshire, husband of Joyce Perry Simms, entered into eternal rest on Saturday, March 8, 2014. Born in Johnstown, PA on December 30, 1934, he was the son of the late Thomas and Mabel (Lane) Simms. He had resided in Palos Verdes, CA for most of his life. He received a BA from Central State University of Ohio and a Master’s Degree from University of CT. Mr. Simms met his wife Joyce at Central State University and were married for 54 years. He was a veteran of the Korean War, having served with the U.S. Air Force. He received the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Service Medal and the United Nations Service Medal for his service in the U.S. Air Force. Besides his wife Joyce, he is survived by his godson Christopher Lehman and his goddaughter Lela Bohannon, both of Los Angeles, CA, a sister Rachel Simms and a brother Thomas Simms, both of Johnstown, PA, a special sister-in-law, Joann Raye of Hamden, a special brother-in-law, Lawrence Raye of Hamden, a special niece Sylvia Allen of Charlotte, NC, a special nephew, Dr. Gregory Miller of Bethesda, MD and also many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by four sisters and three brothers. Family and friends are invited to attend a graveside service with Military Honors on Friday, March 14, 2014 at 11 a.m at Walnut Grove Cemetery, Section 27 South. There will be no calling hours.
