Thomas J. Murtagh, Sr., 82, loving husband of Rose-Marie Cerasale Murtagh was taken home peacefully by the Lord on Saturday, December 12, 2015 at The Regency House in Wallingford after a lengthy illness. Born in Meriden on May 7, 1933, he was the son of the late Cornelius Murtagh Sr. and Marion Suchoski Murtagh. Thomas resided in Meriden all his life, graduating from St. Joseph School and H.C. Wilcox Technical High School. Mr. Murtagh was employed by Southern New England Telephone Company for 37 years. He began his career as a lineman and progressed through various positions and earned his FCC license. Tom retired in 1991 as a Transmission Radio and TV Analyst, traveling throughout the state. He was a veteran of the Korean War, having served with the U.S. Army. Tom was a lifelong parishioner and daily communicant of St. Joseph Church. He was a member of The Telephone Pioneers of America. Known by many as “Tom Terrific”, he was an avid Boston Red Sox and New York Giants fan. Tom was proud of his Irish heritage and loved to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day with his family and friends. He was a wonderful man and an amazing and loving husband, Dad, Grandpa and friend. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends and all who knew him. Besides his wife of 53 years, he is survived by his two daughters, Maryann LaRoche and her husband Robert of Southington, CT and Rosemarie Murtagh of Kauai, HI; his son, Thomas Murtagh, Jr. and his wife Claudia of East Haven, CT; and his twin grandchildren, Gabriella and Daniel Murtagh of East Haven, who were the apple of his eye. He also leaves his brother, Cornelius Murtagh, Jr. and his wife Jane; godchild, Ellen Murtagh and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother, Peter Murtagh. The funeral will be held on Wednesday, December 16th at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph Church, 22 Goodwill Avenue Meriden, CT 06451 for a Mass of Christian burial. Everyone is asked to meet directly at church. Burial with military honors will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery. Family and friends may call at the John J. Ferry & Sons Funeral Home, 88 E. Main St., Meriden, CT 06450 on Tuesday, December 15th from 4 to 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be made to St. Joseph School, 159 West Main St., Meriden, CT 06451 Tom’s family would like to thank his doctors along with their medical and support staffs; also the clinicians and staff of Midstate Hospital, The Regency House in Wallingford, Southington Care Center and Franciscan Hospice Care.
