Michael “Mickey” DeLuccia, 94, of Pensacola, FL passed away on Tuesday, February 24, 2015. Mickey was born on September 3, 1920 to Carmine Pasquale DeLuccia and Antoinette Petrafes in lower Manhattan, New York City. Mickey was a baseball boy wonder in his native Bronx, NY, starring on the mound for a classy semi-pro club while only 16 years old. After pitching for 3 years for the James Monroe High School in New York, he was taken on by the NY Yankees in 1938 and optioned to Williamston, NC of the Coastal Plains League. He helped the club win the pennant in 1938. He retired from the Fafnir Bearing Company in New Britain, CT where he played and managed the Industrial League teams and was a scout for the Boston Braves when they were in Boston. Mickey was on the Merdien Hall of Fame Committee and served as President and Umpire of the Meriden Intermediate League, Boys Club, Meriden Sports Association where he was honored in 1993 with the Sportsman of Distinction Award and was a long time member of the Elks. Baseball and UCONN Girl’s basketball were his passion. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Charles and Dominic and his wife, Mary Kuhta DeLuccia. Mickey is survived by his daughter, Donna Lee (John J.) Gaynor and Mary Lou (Jeff) Cosby; grandchildren, John M. (Felicia) Gaynor, Maria J. (Doug) Joy, Michael Bradford Pyle, Robert Christopher Pyle and Brittany Lynn Cosby; great grandchildren, John Jameson Gaynor, Declan Alexander Joy and Sydney Elena Joy; also nephews, Ronald DeLuccia and Danny DeLuccia and a niece, Adrienne DeFranco. The funeral will be held on Friday, March 6, 2015 at 10 am at SS Peter & Paul Orthodox Church, 54 Park Ave, Meriden. Everyone is asked to meet directly at the church. Burial will be in Peter & Paul Orthodox Cemetery in the spring. Friends and relatives may call at the John J. Ferry & Sons Funeral Home, 88 East Main Street, Meriden on Thursday, March 5, 2015 from 4 to 7 pm. A requiem Parastas will be celebrated at 6 pm.
