Marianne (Petrus) Papandrea, 79, of Meriden, beloved wife of the late John F. Papandrea for 54 years, died peacefully at Elim Park in Cheshire on Thursday, October 16, 2014 after a brief illness. Born in Hartford, Marianne was the daughter of the late John and Eleanor (Bonadies) Petrus. Marianne graduated from Bulkeley High School and received a BA in English from St. Joseph College in West Hartford and an MA in English from Trinity College. She taught English for many years, first in Hartford then at Platt High School and Maloney High School in Meriden. She retired in 2002 as the chair of Maloney’s English department. Marianne was a gifted teacher, and she loved all her students immensely. In her retirement, she was very involved in the Meriden community. Marianne volunteered in the radiology department at Midstate Medical Center, led a monthly book discussion group, and served as President of the MidState Medical Center Auxiliary, as a member of the Meriden Public Library Board, and as a lector at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, where she was a parishioner since moving to Meriden in 1960. In her free time, Marianne enjoyed theater, swimming, reading, bargain shopping, traveling the world with her husband, and spending time with her family and friends. Marianne is survived by her three children and their spouses: Anne Marie and her husband, Michael; Mary-Rose and her husband, David; and John Jr., and his wife, Jennifer. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Giovanna, Joseph, and Vincent; several cousins; and numerous dear friends, both old and new. She was predeceased by her husband, her parents, and her brother, Richard J. Petrus. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, October 20, 2014 at 10:30 a.m at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, 109 Goodwill Ave., Meriden. Everyone is asked to meet directly at the church. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Meriden. The family will receive friends on Sunday, October 19, 2014 from 3 to 7 p.m. at the John J. Ferry & Sons Funeral Home, 88 E. Main St., Meriden. The family wishes to thank Dr. Kevin Sheth, Jessica White, PA, Kelsey Halbert, RN, and the other doctors and staff at Yale New Haven Hospital and Elim Park for providing extraordinarily compassionate care during Marianne’s illness
