Robert Buttner

Robert Joseph Buttner, 92, husband of the late Elna Falk Buttner of 68 years, died on February 21, 2014 at Midstate Medical Center after a brief illness. He was born in Meriden on July 17th, 1921, the son of the late Katherine and Max G. Buttner. Robert lived in Meriden for his entire life and attended Meriden schools. Mr. Buttner was employed by the International Silver Company as a tool and die maker, Elim Park Baptist Home as a maintenance supervisor, and retired from Bradley Home as a maintenance supervisor in 1986. He was a veteran of WWII, having served with the U.S. Army 28th Infantry Division in the European theater. Robert was awarded the Purple Heart; combat infantry badge; WWII victory medal; E-A-ME Theater Campaign medal, and the Good Conduct Medal and a Bronze Star. He was a member of Olivet Baptist Church, Hamden, CT, American Federation of Musicians Union; and he played the trumpet in the Meriden City Band; Lifetime member of the Disabled American Veterans; Member of the Military Order of the Purple Heart. Volunteer Firefighter for the City of Meriden. Robert was actively involved in the construction of the former Calvary Baptist Church at 262 Bee St. and served faithfully as choir director, Deacon and Boy’s Brigade leader. He volunteered with the BGC Gold in the upkeep of Lakeside Christian Camp. Mr. Buttner was an avid reader, enjoyed golfing and bowling. He and his wife attended all academic, music, and sporting events as proud Grandparents and the biggest fans of their beloved Granddaughters. He is survived by four daughters, Judith B. Lucia and husband Stephen of Meriden, Phyllis J. Gura and husband Clement of Plantsville, Ann L. Buttner and Beverly J. Buttner, both of Meriden; four granddaughters, Megan L. Beda and husband Bradley of Colchester, Karen E. Sima of Southington, Christine G. Niedbala and husband Gregory of Wethersfield, and Caitlin E. Gura (currently residing in Vienna, Austria); one sister-in-law Allene Falk of Williamsville, N.Y.; He is also survived by two nieces, Carolyn Falk-Weiner and husband, Michael of Pittsburg, PA and Nancy Falk of Bloomington, IL; one nephew, David A. Falk and wife Cheryl of Decatur, IL, three grandnieces and one grandnephew. He was predeceased by a daughter, Linda Ruth Buttner in January of 1951 and a brother-in-law, Theodore J. Falk The funeral will be held on Friday, Feb. 28th at 10 a.m. at the John J. Ferry & Sons Funeral Home, 88 E. Main St., Meriden, CT 06450 with Reverend William Arruda officiating. Burial with Military Honors will be in Walnut Grove Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Thursday, Feb. 27th from 4 to 7 p.m. Should friends desire, contributions in his memory may be made to the D.A.V.
