A well-respected baseball coach, Thomas H. Gawel, whose life was spent mentoring hundreds of young athletes, passed away suddenly on Tuesday, September 29, 2015 at the age of 61. He was an important man in the lives of his wife Jo-Anne (Bushey) Gawel, his son Matthew Gawel, his daughter-in-law Blair Gawel, and countless others. No one will ever be able to fill his shoes or coach third base like he did. Tom was born November 5, 1953 in Meriden, the son of the late Sally Gawel. He obtained a Bachelor’s of Science degree from Waterbury Technical College and was employed by GEMCO Manufacturing for over 30 years. Tom was a loyal parishioner of St. Aloysius Church in Plantsville. In addition to Jo-Anne, Matthew, and Blair, Tom is survived by numerous cousins. Though he grew up an only child, he became a beloved in-law to each member of Jo-Anne’s family. Thomas’ family invites you to a celebration of his life at John J. Ferry & Sons Funeral Home, 88 East Main Street, Meriden on Saturday, October 3, 2015 from 10:00am – 12:00pm. A memorial service will immediately follow from 12:00pm – 12:30pm. Burial will be at the convenience of the family. You are also invited to join the family for a remembrance luncheon after the service at 1:30pm at East Street Eatery located at 141 East Street in Wolcott. In lieu of flowers, donations in Thomas’ memory may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project via the Victorian House Open, a golf tournament that Tom loyally and generously supported for the last 9 years. The WWP is a cause very near and dear to his heart. Donations can be made here:http://fundraise.woundedwarriorproject.org/rtt/Fundraising/individual/victorian-house-open-2015
