Carroll Custy

Carroll M. Custy, 94, of Meriden, beloved husband of the late Mary (Conlon) Custy, died on Wednesday, August 12, 2015 at Middlesex Hospital after a brief illness. Born in Meriden on November 20, 1920, he was the son of the late John and Johanna (Caffrey) Custy and had attended St. Joseph School and was a graduate of Meriden High School, Class of 1938. Mr. Custy was employed by the United States Postal Service as a supervisor, owned Custy’s Rug Cleaning Service and after his retirement, was a Toll Collector on the Wilbur Cross Parkway. He was a veteran of World War II, having served with the U.S. Navy, in the Atlantic Theatre on the Destroyer USS Ludlow. Mr. Custy was a very active parishioner and lector of St. Rose of Lima Church. He was a coach for many years for Meriden Little League and the Intermediate League in Meriden. He was one of the founding members of the Meriden Sports Hall of Fame, a member of the Meriden Hall of Fame, a Board Member of the Meriden Boys Club and a member of Friends of the Library. He organized the Meriden High School, Class of 1938 reunions, and was a proud performer in the St. Rose of Lima Variety Shows. Mr. Custy loved playing sports and was on the Meriden High School baseball and basketball teams and many other basketball league teams. He was an avid fan of the Boston Red Sox and the UConn Girls Basketball Team. He enjoyed traveling the world with his beloved wife of 58 years Mary, to whom he was a devoted caregiver in her final years. He loved and cherished spending time with his children and grandchildren. He was his grandchildren’s biggest fan, cheering them on in their sporting events and school endeavors. Carroll spent many mornings with his pals at McDonalds talking about old times. He was a kind and caring man who had a wonderful sense of humor. He will be dearly missed. He is survived by four children, Tim Custy and his wife Julie of South Meriden, Eileen Custy and her fiancé William Janssen of Northford, Mary Ann Amarante and her husband Vincent of Middlefield, and Patricia Yale and her husband John of Middlefield; 11 grandchildren, John and Tim Custy, Michael, Nicholas and Alex Amarante, Carolyn and Melissa Grime, and Mary, Megan, Molly and Matthew Yale. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews, grand nieces and grand nephews. He was predeceased by two brothers, Raymond and Jack Custy, and a sister, Doris Pronovost. The funeral will be held on Monday, August 17, 2015 at 9 am from the John J. Ferry & Sons Funeral Home, 88 East Main Street, Meriden and at 10 am at St. Rose of Lima Church for a Mass of Christian Burial. Burial with military honors will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery. Friends and family may call at the funeral home on Sunday, August 16, 2015 from 3 to 7 pm.
