Lucy E. (Carofino) Niland, 89, beloved wife of 64 years to the late James L. Niland, Sr., died Tuesday, January 27, 2015. Born in Meriden on October 27, 1925 to the late Anthony and Lucy Carofino, and favored niece of the late Joseph Carofino. Lucy was a lifelong resident of Meriden and summered at the family cottage at Lake Hayward. Lucy was an active member, officer and Past President of the Meriden Emblem Club #224, a now defunct auxiliary of the Meriden Elks, where she had numerous friends and worked on many charitable projects. She had also been a long time member of the Meriden Daughters of Isabella. Lucy and Jim enjoyed being members of bowling leagues in the 1970’s and 80’s and enjoyed rooting for her favorite team, the Boston Red Sox. She is survived by her four children: James L. Niland, Jr.; Carol Ann Nettleton (James); Thomas J. Niland; Jay T. Niland, Sr. (Diane). Her grandchildren: Camie M. Niland-Poirier (Peter); James L. Niland, III; James F. Nettleton, II (Pamela); Marc T. Nettleton (Jennifer); Scott T. Niland (Kara); Christina M. Risk-Adams (Seph); Shannon Y. and Jay T. Niland, Jr. Lucy is also survived by 14 great –grandchildren: Celia E., Mathieu J., Peter J. and Luc. M. Poirier, Jame L. IV (Jimbo) and Mackenzie Niland, Ean F. Nosal, Caroline M., Connor J., Marc S. and Calli A. Nettleton; Madeline R. and Nicholas J. Niland and Layla S. Adams; a sister, Eleanore Barnes; two former daughters-in-law, Judith M. Niland and Rachel W. Niland as well as many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a sister, Mary D’Agostino and a brother, George Carofino. Per her request, there are no calling hours and the funeral will be private. Arrangements are under the direction of the John J. Ferry & Sons Funeral Home, 88 East Main Street, Meriden, CT 06450.
