Robert J. Nichols Sr., 79, husband of Jean C. (Banack) Nichols, died on Saturday, April 26, 2014 after a brief illness. Born in Upland, Pennsylvania on October 06, 1934, he was the son of the late Thomas & Helen (Giecold) Nichols Sr. Mr. Nichols was employed as an Industrial Engineer for over 30 years. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and a parishioner of St. Stanislaus Church. Mr. Nichols loved horse racing and played softball in Meriden for many years. He was also a big fan of the N.Y. Yankees and both the Men and Women’s UConn Basketball teams of which he and his son attended many games for many years. Besides his wife of 56 years, he is survived by a son, Robert J. Nichols Jr. of Meriden; a sister Helen Wollenberg, a brother, Thomas Nichols Jr. and wife Janet, and a brother-in-law Stanley Banack and wife Judy, all of Florida. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews and his beloved dog “Bernie”. He was predeceased by a sister Nina Nichols. A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, April 29, 2014 at 10:00am at Sacred Heart Cemetery. There are no calling hours. The John J. Ferry Sons Funeral Home is entrusted with arrangements.
