Hector R. (Victor) Gonzalez, 79, husband of Isolina Gonzalez, died on February 26, 2014 at Midstate Medical Center. Born in Aguada, Puerto Rico on January 17, 1935, he was the son of the late Ramon J. and Mercedes (Morales) Gonzalez. Mr. Gonzalez had resided in Meriden for fifty-six years. He attended the University of Mayaquez and was employed by Prudential. He was a peacetime veteran having served with the U.S. Army. He was a parishioner of St. Rose of Lima Church and a member of Catholic Family Services, Maloney Scholarship Committee, Democratic Town Committee, and was the Chairman of the Meriden Housing Authority. He also served as past President of the Latin American Society. While serving as an active member on the Meriden Democratic Town Committee, Hector worked on local, state and federal campaigns serving as treasurer, district leader and delegate to state and congressional conventions. He was a leader in the Latino community and was most proud of his work in helping to get Latinos elected into office and appointed to local boards. He worked hard to create a strong voice for Meriden’s Hispanic population through his political activism, knocking on doors and making calls to encourage others to make their voices heard. Known for his kind demeanor and strong principles, he was well respected by town committee members and elected officials, who often sought his advice and counsel. Hector was instrumental in organizing the Latino Bi-Centennial Celebration which served to recognize Latino influence and contributions to the City of Meriden, the community he loved so much. On August 25, 2003 The Meriden Housing Authority first swore in Commissioner Hector Gonzalez. From that date onward the lives of the Meriden community were blessed with his knowledge, kindness and generosity. He has helped so many people and families throughout the entire Meriden Community. His kind deeds go far beyond words and the “recorded Board of Directors minutes”…his accomplishments and vision were far reaching and will affect the lives of the Meriden community for generations. The Meriden Housing Authority is proud to have had Hector as a devoted, Chairman of the Board, Acting Commissioner and Director! Hector served the MHA for over 10 years. He volunteered his time selflessly and without hesitation. His service to our organization is forever memorialized. Hectors commitment to the MHA Board of Directors was evident even in the preceding few days. On Monday February 24th, Hector came to the meeting, sat in his chair and shared laughter with all who were lucky enough to see him that evening. The Meriden Housing Authority is forever changed for the better because of Hector and he will be greatly missed by our entire MHA family.
